Mouthguards Teeth Protection for Grinders and Clenchers

What is a Mouthguard

A mouthguard is a plastic piece worn over the upper or lower teeth, usually during sleep, to protect the teeth from the harmful forces resulting from clenching and grinding of the teeth. Since mouthguards diminish or eliminate clenching and grinding, they also decrease the accompanying pain and spasms of the jaw muscles and relieve headaches.

Mouthguards can be custom-made by us or can be store-bought.

The store-bought ones fall in the do-it-yourself category. They are often called the boil-and-bite type. That is because they need to be softened in boiling water and adapted over the teeth by biting into the soft material until it hardens. The fit of these mouthguards is not very good and most people do not use them for long.

The mouthguards we make are custom-made to fit your mouth very nicely and comfortably. They are made from accurate molds we make of your teeth. The lab then makes a vacuum-made mouthguard that fits over your teeth very accurately. We make what we call the Hard-Soft type of mouthguard: it has an inner soft layer that sits like a soft cushion on your teeth and a hard outer layer that contacts your opposite teeth to protect them from wearing away. A mouthguard is almost always worn only on one jaw, either the upper or the lower teeth.

The mouthguards we make are of two types:

  • Horseshoe shaped: this type covers all the teeth , usually upper teeth, front and back
  • NTI type: this type only covers 4 or 5 front teeth, usually the lower teeth.

What are the Advantages of Mouthguards:

  • Protect the teeth from wearing away, chipping and fractures in mouths of people who clench and grind their teeth, usually in their sleep
  • Diminish or eliminate muscle spasms and pain and headaches usually experienced by clenchers and grinders
  • Protect ceramic crowns, veneers and cosmetic bonding from fracture, especially of front teeth
